A Sharpsburg man is facing an attempted murder charge after investigators say he intentionally crossed the center line before a crash that left another driver critically injured.
Matthew Lucas Bliffen is charged with attempted murder following the Oct. 24 crash on Maysville Road in Montgomery County.
The citation says the two-vehicle crash happened around 5:27 a.m. near 7283 Maysville Road.
Investigators allege Bliffen was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram from Mount Sterling toward Sharpsburg when he crossed the center line and struck a 2014 Nissan Sentra.
The driver of the Nissan was initially taken to CommonSpirit Saint Joseph Mount Sterling before being transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
The citation says the driver remained in critical condition when the document was completed.
Investigators say Bliffen left the crash on foot, jumping several fences and going through a creek.
He was taken into custody around 7:58 a.m. on Rogers Mill Road in Bath County, about two-and-a-half hours after the crash.
According to the citation, Bliffen later told investigators during a recorded interview that he crossed the center line because he wanted to hurt himself.
The citation also says he told investigators he had been drinking alcohol earlier in the night.
Investigators reported seeing open alcohol containers inside the truck. Both vehicles were seized as evidence.
A search warrant was obtained for a sample of Bliffen's blood, which was collected at CommonSpirit Saint Joseph Mount Sterling.
The citation does not provide the results of that test.
Bliffen is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident/failing to render aid involving death or serious physical injury, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, no registration receipt and no registration plates.
Bliffen is scheduled to be arraigned in Montgomery County District Court on October 29.
